Slamalamadingdong! New S%^t Slam feat. Jasmine Waiters

  • The Melba Spiegeltent 35 Johnston Street Fitzroy Australia (map)

Slama acknowledges that our slam takes place in Naarm, on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded, no treaty was signed and it always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Slama invites you to our new s$%t slam in June, where it's all about new poets and new poems. Poets who have never entered Slama before get two names in the hat so get twice the chance of being drawn, plus all poets must perform poems they've never performed at Slama before, ever, and if you want to challenge yourself that little bit extra, bring fresh fresh fresh poems that you've never performed anywhere before. Plus Round 2 will be a free write round you write in the break, with words and prompts suggested by the audience.

Plus for June we have a very special feature travelling all the way from California, Jasmine Waiters, who we met over at NPS last year so we're super excited to have her in Melbourne.

Jasmine Waiters is an emerging spoken word poet from California who has performed on local, national, and soon to be international stages. Jasmine is also on the verge of releasing her first collection of poems, "Before We Were Magic". As an artist, she often uses a combination of raw truth, relentless imagery, and ambitious metaphors as a means for commentary and expression.

Slama is a three-round poetry slam, judged by random (but fairly represented) members of the audience. You've got 3 minutes to perform a poem of your own original work, with no props or costumes. For this month, all poems must never have been performed at Slama before and round 2 is a free write round.

The top 6 from the first round go to the second round, and the top 3 from the second round's cumulative scores go to the final round, and one is crowned winner each month. 1st place wins $50 cash and a video on the Melbourne Spoken Word video channels.

If you want to slam, you have to show up at 6.30pm sharp and at 6.45pm, we draw 12 names from the hat. This month if you've never performed at Slama ever before, you get your name in twice. It's $5 to enter. For off-season slams, there's no automatic entry for the following month if your name isn't drawn, but we'll try and squeeze a few extra people into the slam.
