Slamalamadingdong! Cover Slam feat. Pola Fanous

  • The Melba Spiegeltent 35 Johnston Street Fitzroy Australia (map)

Slama acknowledges that our slam takes place in Naarm, on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded, no treaty was signed and it always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

Slama invites you to a special off-season slam this May, hosting the cover slam where slam poets will battle it out performing the poems of their poetic heroes. Poets will acknowledge and pay tribute to the poets that inspire them in this special slam. Same rules apply elsewhere, 3 minutes, no props or costumes, but the poetry must NOT be your original work.

And we have a special feature for you, NSW Poetry Slam Champ Pola Fanous visiting from Sydney.

POLA FANOUS
Pola Fanous (@polathepoet) is a young spoken-word poet and performing artist from Western Sydney. An Egyptian-born immigrant, at age 20 he has featured at the Parramatta, Granville & Bankstown Slams, and at events Australia-wide. In 2017, Pola performed at the Digital Writers’ Festival, The Plot Music Festival and the Parliament House of Australia. In 2018, Pola competed in the Australian Poetry Slam Final at the Sydney Opera House and was appointed the 2018 NSW Slam Champion! “STRONGSOFT” is his debut collection of poetry.

THE SLAM
Slama is a three-round poetry slam, judged by random (but fairly represented) members of the audience. You've got 3 minutes to perform a poem no props or costumes. For month only, the poem is from a poet other than yourself, with acknowledgement and credit at the start.

The top 6 from the first round go to the second round, and the top 3 from the second round's cumulative scores go to the final round, and one is crowned winner each month. 1st place wins $50 cash. We may not produce videos this month due to people performing other people's work.

If you want to slam, you have to show up at 6.30pm sharp and at 6.45pm, we draw 12 names from the hat. It's $5 to enter. For off-season slams, there's no automatic entry for the following month if your name isn't drawn, but we'll try and squeeze a few extra people into the slam.

Slam rego is 6.30-6.45pm
